Mapping the Undiscovered Country

The picture of heaven we get from the children is reinforced by an entirely different source: past life therapy. Since the early 1960s thousands of people have reexperienced their past lives while under hypnosis and guided by a trained past life therapist. Past life therapy can be a powerful technique for resolving lifelong emotional and physical problems—sometimes very quickly.

Yet people who have never experienced a past life regression often assume it’s only about past lives—about seeing yourself as a peasant in Germany or a slave in Egypt, for example. What they don’t know is that through past life regression you can also experience, in full Technicolor, with Surround Sound realism, the mystical moment of death and what happens after leaving the body. At the moment of death, regression clients make a dramatic shift to a state of heightened awareness. From the vantage of their eternal soul, they gain tremendous insight into the life they just left behind and the issues their soul carries from lifetime to lifetime. Past life therapists know this after-death perception is often the source of the most profound revelations and healing.

With encouragement from their therapist guide, clients keep going forward beyond the moment of death to reexperience the life-review, planning and choosing the next life, and the return to a new body. In the process, they gain deep understanding of the spiritual reasons for choosing that particular life. And no matter how otherworldly the interlife experience is, when the session is over they can remember everything and describe (within the limits of language) what they saw. The understanding stays with them and often leads to profound adjustments in their lives. Some lose their fear of death.

In the course of conducting hundreds of these past life regressions, therapists noticed recurring patterns in what their clients experienced. A few therapists published studies and books describing what appeared to be true for all souls in the interlife process. These reports from therapists are valuable to corroborate and enhance what we hear in the reports from children. Because adults under hypnosis reveal much more detail than children’s snippets of memory, the regression studies help us to complete the picture of the interlife and answer some questions of why and how we choose our next life. Most important, we see that adults and children agree on the main points—particularly on the basic fact that the soul does have choice in deciding its next life.

In 1979 Dr. Helen Wambach, a seasoned past life therapist and researcher, was first to publish accounts of the interlife state. In her book Life Before Life, she describes her systematic exploration of the time before conception and birth. She designed experiments in which groups of several dozen people were hypnotized and regressed at the same time. Immediately afterward she asked them to write the answers to a series of questions about their prebirth memories, such as: Did you choose to be born? How did you feel about beginning your next life?
